Inspiring people to reach their full potential

Banish the January Blues

If I ever have a ‘down Holland’ day then I usually hit the beach for a long walk and that usually works to clear my head (see my earlier blog on how to defrag your head).  But what do you do when it’s early January, the sky is grey, it’s raining (again!) and you have a double whammy of the blues; January blues and ‘down Holland’?

We all have days like this and it doesn’t really matter where we live but what is important is to have a tool or technique that works to pull you out of it.  For me it usually is to go for a long walk but this time I didn’t want to get soaked so yesterday I sat down with a cup of coffee and read through a couple of pages of my Success Journal and it was amazing the impact that it had. (A Success Journal is a bit like a diary, though you don’t have to write in it every day.  There are certain rules to keeping a Success Journal, the most important being that you can only write positive things in it. In short it is like a list of all your achievements no matter how small.).

The thing is, it is just too easy to forget all the good things you have done or achieved in your life so it is well worth the few minutes it takes to note them down – everyone has achieved something in their life.  Then, when you have a day when you feel fed up, not able to achieve/do anything and basically can’t be bothered, you take a read through your Success Journal and it is a great pick-me-up.

After reading through a couple of pages, I started to write some targets or goals for things that I want to achieve over the next few months.  These are not New Year’s Resolutions because I always break them!  These are things that I want to achieve and know that with a bit of effort I can.  It really got me focused and now I am certainly motivated to do something which I definitely wasn’t yesterday!

And the first way to make sure that you reach your goals is to tell someone about them so here they are:

  • Do a 3 day detox 4 times a year and take regular exercise (I actually started a power gym class today which was fun though I don’t think I will be able to walk tomorrow!);
  • Double my online visibility by the end of September;
  • Double my number of clients by the end of the year and only work 20 hours a week;
  • Run at least 5 workshops, including at least one new one, by August. (The first one, Stand out from the Crowd, is already scheduled for January 29th );
  • Sit my NT2 niveau 2 exam (Dutch as a second language) by July.

Now I am going to go and break these down into smaller tasks that I know I can achieve and then I will be well on my way to adding more to my success journal – which will be a great pick-me-up next time I have a ‘down Holland’ day!  Feel free to give me a call or drop me an email if you would like some help to make this technique work for you too. And keep following to see how I get on!
